When Akechi opened his eyes and found himself alive and well again, he'd nearly had a fit. He did not go through all of that nonsense just to be dragged back out of the grave and shoved into saccharine dollhouse world for some delusional therapists own self satisfaction.
And then he gets back to his apartment and discovers that it's a mess, his things all covered in dust and the limited variety of food in his fridge and cabinets all expired. And then one of his neighbors is surprised but delighted to see him, saying that she hadn't seen him in 'what felt like forever'. And then he learns that it's not even the same date it was when they beat Maruki. A bit of nosing around and slinking about helps him learn a few other things. Wakaba Isshiki is dead. Kunikazu Okumnura is dead. Masayoshi Shido is currently under investigation. And Goro Akechi is...
Missing. Or at least, his whereabouts are unknown since his media appearances abruptly halted back in December. He's managed to keep his phone and apartment, but only because they're still automatically drafting from his (now nearly empty) bank account. He's pretty sure he's been written off as a dropout, but no one's gone so far as to declare him dead. This isn't Maruki's false reality.
So then what the hell is it?
After a while, he realizes there's only one solution that makes sense: this is actually reality, and he's somehow still alive. It's completely absurd, but there's nothing else that fits with the information he has. He's making his way home, mulling over his options, when he's approached by a pair of men in dark suits. It's about as cliche as it gets and Akechi is ready to brush them off... but then they start talking about Shadows and Persona and he feels compelled to listen.
He doesn't trust this Kijiro Group one bit, but he has to admit that he sees the merits to working with them. More importantly, he sees the merits in keeping them away from the Phantom Thieves. It's easy enough to cut a deal. Akechi has more experience with the Metaverse than anyone else in that group, and the Thieves themselves are decentralized, scattered, and (most importantly) busy enough that working with the Kijiro group is unlikely to be high on their priorities. Besides, if he's going to spend a year as a ronin he may as well do something productive when he doesn't actually need to study.
When he gets his first mission he almost reconsiders. There are a lot of people he'd rather not speak to right now, and Takuto Maruki sits at the top of his list. He's used to doing things he doesn't want for the sake of a job, however, and this is considerably less annoying and distasteful than sucking up to Shido and the SIU director, or... you know, all the murder.
Still, tracking down a doctor by hailing a taxi isn't exactly what he was expecting, but at least there's good odds they won't be interrupted. Wearing nothing except a hat as a disguise also feels very silly, but it actually seems to work. The car rolls to a stop and Akechi lets himself in, and it's not until they're on the move and back in traffic that he slips the hat off and starts to pet his hair back into place.
"Good afternoon, Doctor Maruki." He very deliberately keeps his tone casual, like part of him isn't thinking it would be pretty funny to startle Maruki badly enough to cause an accident.
